About this property

Welcome to Great Bear Lodge

Great Bear Lodge offers a remote wilderness experience focused on bear viewing and nature exploration. Located off the beaten path, the lodge operates from a floating site approximately 50 miles from its listed address at 6420 Hardy Bay Rd, which serves as the seaplane base for guest arrivals and departures. This setting appeals mainly to visitors interested in wildlife and outdoor recreation rather than city or resort amenities.

The lodge provides comfortable accommodations in a smoke-free environment with free breakfast and kid-friendly options, although it does not offer Wi-Fi, air conditioning, a swimming pool, a restaurant, or fitness facilities. Guests seeking a quiet, nature-focused stay without typical hotel conveniences will find the atmosphere relaxing and suitable for decompressing.

Guest reviews highlight the knowledgeable and attentive guides, quality of food, and the opportunity to see multiple grizzly bears in their natural habitat. Some describe the experience as unforgettable and suitable for various ages, though others advise careful trip planning due to seasonal variations in bear activity. The remote location and lack of some services suggest the lodge fits outdoor enthusiasts who value wildlife and scenery above luxury.

Nearby points of interest include the Port Hardy Visitor Information Centre, Carrot Park, and the Quatse Salmon Stewardship Centre, providing additional options for sightseeing. Port Hardy Airport is approximately 11 minutes by car from the seaplane base, facilitating access for travelers heading to the lodge. Several hotels and cabins within one mile offer alternative accommodations, indicating a range of options for visitors to the area.

Couldn't have asked for a better place to spend our honeymoon. The guides were fantastic and knowledgable, the food was out of this world, the accommodations were lovely, the ability to decompress and unwind was priceless. Counting down the days until we can return.

A truly amazing wilderness experience. Hosts Marg and Tom have assembled a first rate team (Yann, Maeve, Kestrel, Josh and Ella) who are passionate about sharing their knowledge of bears and other wildlife as they expertly guide you on multiple viewings per day. The scenery is stunning, the remoteness exciting and the experience sublime. We especially liked the boat touring. And of course, the bears - what amazing animals they are. Very healthy food provided and the accommodation is excellent. Cannot recommend highly enough.

That's a life time experience for anybody! Very experienced guides, and hosts make your stay comfortable in the middle of wilderness. Still, can be extreme for some people. You should also carefully plan your trip time because bears watching is different each season. It makes sense to contact owners and ask all questions. They are _not_ 'trying to sell', they are honest in their 'bear forecasts' and all other things.

September 6, 2023. Age over 70! This trip was for four nights. I would highly recommend the Great Bear Lodge to anyone that is interested in viewing grizzly bears. The lodge is beautiful, the location is breathtaking, food was excellent, and the accommodations are very clean and comfortable. Everyone was very friendly, and they made sure we had everything we needed. The guides were very attentive, and knowledgeable. We saw about 12 female grizzly bears, and four "coys" cubs of the year. They were adorable. The flight in and out on the Grumann Goose Sea Plane was absolutely fun with great views of the valleys below. The pilots were very friendly, and the flights were smooth. I am so glad that I did this trip. No matter how old you are, I think you would enjoy this trip. Safe travels!

Recently spent 4 days and 3 nights here. Except for the horse flies, our stay was fantastic. Hat's off to Tom and the crew for a really memorable stay.

Note that the address, 6420 Hardy Bay Rd, is for the seaplane base, where you will go to embark for their floating lodge, 50 miles distant. The lodge itself is not at the 6420 Hardy Bay location.
